Arleta Jean Voyce was born March 5, 1939, in Corning, Iowa the daughter of Leonard and Iola (Simonds) Steele.
She was raised in Knoxville, Iowa. During high school, Arleta wrote a weekly school newsletter and worked at Braida Grocery. She graduated with the Class of 1957. She then worked at West Elementary as the lunch lady.
On March 12, 1961, Arleta was united in marriage to Rodney Gene Voyce. The couple always made Knoxville their home.
Arleta was a Deputy Sherriff under Lee Shives and had also worked nights at the county Auditor’s office. She later took a job at the Knoxville Raceway at the main concession stand and eventually moved to the ticket office. She started as a bookkeeper during the week and was a scorer and ran the time clock on race nights.
Arleta ran the ticket office until her retirement in 2011 but continued to work on race nights for several more years. She was a welcome smile and recognized voice to race fans all over the world.
Arleta passed away Tuesday, May 9, 2023, at the Cottages, in Pella, Iowa, at the age of 84 years.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Gene, and brothers: Lowell, Merril, and Roy Steele.
Those left to cherish Arleta’s memory include her daughters: Elaine Voyce (Lyndon Schroeder) of Urbandale, Iowa, Teresa (Bill) Morgan of Knoxville, Brenda (Gale) Happy of Maybee, Michigan, and Vickie (Kello) Ramirez of Weslaco, Texas; 6 grandchildren: Beth Morgan, Whitney Lee, Taylor Morgan, Richard Ramirez, Roy Ramirez, and Melinda Savage; brother, Bob Steele of Knoxville and many great-grandchildren, other family members and friends.
